1fastC6 10
my list would be too long, and my memory is too short, but... earliest memory is a Danny Kay album of a Hans Christian Anderson stories my grandmother gave me that I wore out, so that one has to start the list...then there'd be a few late rock n' roll (I'm talkin the real stuff here)... a fair stretch dominated by the Beatles...followed by run of british invasion w/ a couple of Jimi's thrown in just to spice it up..a short stretch dominated by southern guitar bands...insert 3-4 years of fusion (I completely missed disco and rock pretty much sucked in the late 70's)... I have no idea what I listened to in the 80's, I try to block it out completely, but it was probably something I thought was edgy... like Blondie, The Police, The Cars... deep inside I felt Huey Lewis was a refreshing break from it all... NO hair bands on my list for this era... I remember I was glad when the alt rock station came to town, so throw a few of those on the list next, but for the life of me I couldn't even name the bands except for Pearl Jam and Nirvana...the last 10 years would be mostly a mix of no-name independent environmental, atmospheric, electronic, chill, nuage, relaxation/meditation artists that I can find on internet and satellite radio... no album names come to mind, hell I can't even name the artists... I guess if NPR made an album, I would have to have it on the list as its what I listen to on the way to and from work...
Sneaky 10
I don't think we have the burst bandwidth for my list. I figured (to simplify) I'd just fill in slots just up to 1987 and got tired of thinking at 1977 just about the same time I stopped keeping track. But my list includes nearly every genre and artist since Nat King Cole - Unforgetable 52 and to Jimmy Buffet - Margaritavile 77. Como, Berry, Fisher, Presley, Wooley, Avalon, Charles, Beach Boys, Beatles, Righteous Brothers, The mama&Papa, Doors, Sly&Family, Raiders, Mclean, Croce, Denver, 4 Seasons on and on and on. Gonzo 10
The only redeeming quality in his list is The Buthole Surfers & redeeming wasn't even in their vocabulary. rock pretty much sucked in the late 70's)... Nugent, Aerosmith, Heart, ZZ Top, AC DC....there was lots of great stuff. The radio plkayedf crap (as usual)

Sneaky 10
The list of who and what songs sucked in the 70's is longer than those that didn't. Even great bands blew chunks as often as they produced good stuff. The 70's had people like, The Partridge family, The Osmond’s, Neil Sedaka, John Travolta, Wayne Newton, Olivia Newton, Styx, Queen, Village People, Toto, Three Degrees, Barbara Streisand, Neil Diamond just to name 13 big names that all sucked. Not every thing all these people did was bad, it just seems much of it was more memorable for being crap than memorable for being good. It seemed to me that the music industry wasn’t in touch with the listeners and on average (not all) produced stuff that was designed to calm, reduce radicalism, return to the 50’s leaving the 60’s and lessons learned behind. I suppose it was viewed as healing "us" but it was much to kissy face (musically) an era for me in general and didn't fit what I understood about the world. There certainly was good stuff and great bands in the 70's as already noted. Yes, Gonzo, I agree it was the Radio stations that controlled what was heard but limitations and trend shift started with the producers. ::) It just seems (to me) that much of the 70's, particularly early 70's, was a forced rebound to a more victorian approach to life as represented in what we heard (not what we choose to listen to) by the mass of what was being produced. Now, after stifling what the 70's should have been known for musically we have to endure those same people (artists) giving us advice and their vast political knowledge. - To them - Shut the heck up and act, sing or get out of the way you've already had your say and messed up the one decade where the changes you now fight for could have actually taken place if you hadn't kissed corporate ass and simply cashed in. Oh! and  1Fast6 Strong language removed - sorry about that<O:p</O:p

Gonzo 10
Yes, Gonzo, I agree it was the Radio stations that controlled what was heard but limitations and trend shift started with the producers. It's both. In the 70's music was still quite regional. Cheap Trick was a midwest favorite but hardly anybody on the west coast heard of 'em (until California Man). That is but one small example. Hell, Judas Priest & AC DC were opening for everybody back here, while headlining the coasts. (so the Mrs tell me-I was all the way western). Then...somebody decided to conglomerate. Travel was once an intersting undertaking. Market by market, the top 10 was the same but the rest was unique & identifiable. Slowly but surely, the entire FM band was one big top 40 list. Coast to coast, snow to sand, you couldn't get away from the same songs. Remember when the Mommas & the Poppas was followed by Jimi Hendrix followed by Melanie followed by the Amboy Dukes? The producers followed the same trend. Individuals had styles but they weren't the sole providers. The vast array of styles were continuing until the mid 80's. Suddenly, record companies said heavy metal is making us rich (were had been listening to that style for over a decade). So we went from Iron Maiden to Motley Crue to Poison. A steady drain of talent melded into a steady pop culture cash cow. Suddenly, someone discovered Guns n Roses. I was in L.A. at the time, seeing them in bars & at parties. Next thing you know, the A&R guys were in search of the next GnR. Every band for the next three years sounded like spin offs. When that got old, somebody found this loser in Seattle. Whining about what a miserable wretch he was & how life sucked but flannel shirts were cool. Now we have Nirvana (why didn't that shotgun go off 5 years sooner)....the next decade was knock off whinebags. On & on it goes. Blame it on MTV (video killed the radio star) & A&R men. We'll never see the talents of Janice Joplin or Joe Cocker again.

Winky 10
As I think about it would be just too damn much work! I'd have to cover the mid to late 60's with the British invasion then on to the late 60's early 70's to cover the 70's would take days the eighties? crap I could use up weeks... It would get alot easier after that goin' into the 90's as things began to suck and it would certainly taper off precipitously in the outghies but there's always new good fun stuff to listen to if you search Sarah's coming here in the middle of the month I think I'm a gonna go with my kid... C'mon whats not to love? "Everybody wants a thrill It tastes so good it makes you ill No one's gonna make you stop Everybody's havin' fun Dancing with a loaded gun No one's gonna make you give it up The thrill can kill..."
